Every woman should be breast aware.
It is about becoming familiar with your normal breast tissue
and how it changes, for example at different times of the
month. Get into the habit of looking at and feeling your
breasts from time to time.
Top Tips:
Use a mirror so you can see your breasts from different
angles.
It may be easier to feel your breasts with a soapy hand
in the bath or shower. You can do this lying or standing,
whichever you are comfortable with.
The Five Point Code:
- Know what is normal for you
- Know what changes to look and feel for e.g. Lumps,
puckering, discharge
- Look and feel
- Report any changes to your GP without delay
- Attend for routine breast screening if you are 50 or
over
If you are between 50-64 you are entitled
to be screened every 3 years as part of the National Breast
Screening Programme.
To find where your local breast-screening unit is call
the A&A NHS trust number at the bottom of the page.
Menopause is the medical term for the end of a woman's
menstrual cycle. It is a natural part of ageing, and occurs
when the ovaries stop producing hormones called oestrogen.
Signs include:
- Mood swings
- Tiredness and lethargy
- Hot flushes
- Night sweats
- Irregular or heavy periods
The menopause can occur anywhere between the ages of 45-55,
but for a few it is even earlier (as young as 35).
