About Stress Management in the Three Towns

The Three Towns Stress Management Initiative is a pilot project aimed at providing Stress Management to people who live and work in the Three Towns of Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston.

The project is a joint venture with The Princess Royal Trust For Carers based in Irvine who cover the rest of North Ayrshire.

The Three Towns Healthy Living manages the Stress Management Initiative based on a successful similar project in the Inverclyde area. The initiative is being developed and co-ordinated by a development worker who is a qualified Holistic and Stress Management Therapist.

The service will be delivered by a team of sessionally employed therapists and students on placement from James Watt College in Kilwinning. All the students are already qualified and fully insured to practise. In this way the students are given an opportunity to gain valuable community work experience.

It is planned to use a validated self help IT package which would allow local people to raise their awareness of their own health and to build skills and confidence in accessing information technology.

The service is aimed at and delivered to the following groups of referral sources within the Three Towns:

  • Self referrals
  • Community/Voluntary Organisations
  • GP/Social Work/CPN
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Business/Private Organisations – for a possible charge

Feedback from local outreach facilities has highlighted the importance of the service being delivered as part of an integrated approach to improve health and well-being.

As a result the Stress Management Initiative is already delivering the service in outreach centres within the community of the Three Towns – The Three Towns Resource Centre, The James Moffat Child and Family Centre and Ardeer House Community Centre with plans to expand into further into identified centres in the near future.

What is Stress?
Stress is normal and even necessary for a healthy life. It is the tension created by external factors/pressures on the one hand and our reactions and feelings about our circumstances and ourselves on the other. It is only when we feel that we cannot deal or cope with it that stress has a negative effect on our lives. Stress effects anybody no matter their age or where they live.

Symptoms
Some examples are: short temper, can’t cope, anxiety, can’t sleep, smoking or drinking more, can’t concentrate, tension in your body, headaches, panic attacks, feel guilty when relaxing etc.

Who is it for?
The service is for anybody living or working in the Three Towns. You may book an appointment yourself or be referred by your GP or health care worker.

What do we offer?
There are many ways to deal with the causes or symptoms of stress. We can teach you those skills by using:

  • Aromatherapy,
  • Reflexology
  • Indian head massage
  • Holistic facial treatments
  • Shiatsu “type” massage

  • Physical assessment
  • Exercise advice
  • Diet advice
  • Groupwork including exercise and on-site massage relaxation.

Who provides the service?
The Initiative is managed by a development worker Lorraine Mulholland a qualified holistic therapist with a diploma in stress management.
Treatment programmes will be drawn up and delivered by a team of students who are currently studying for a diploma in stress management at James Watt College school of beuty and holistic therapies. All students are already qualified and insured holistic therapists.

Where can I access the service?
The service is provided not only in Gp surgeries throughout the Three Towns, but also in the Three Towns Resource Centre, saltcoats, and a number of community venues across the three towns. So you don’t need to travel far if you do not want to.

Are you stressed out?
Or always angry?

Got exams or exam results coming up? Worried about starting school or your first job? Parents always arguing? Being bullied?

All these things make us feel stressed out and angry.

Some of your anger may be due to stress – people who are under a lot of pressure tend to get angry a lot more easily.

So if you are stressed, what can you do about it?

  • Think of your stress as a puzzle to be solved. Work out what situations make you feel stressed and how you behave.
  • Think of different ways you could behave in that situation, so you would feel more in control.
  • Imagine how other people might behave if you acted differently. If you seem nervous, for example, they might get nervous too; if you smile, they will probably smile back.
  • Try rehearsing different ways of behaving — act it out loud with a friend.
  • You might get it wrong when you try it for real, but not everyone is right first time. Try it again, next time.

Stress is not something new

Feeling the Pressure?

We are all familiar with the word ‘stress’. Stress can be when you have money worries, employment issues, ill health or family issues.

In fact, to most of us, stress is the same as worry. Worrying about something makes you stressed. Changes in your life, whether they are good changes or not, can cause emotional and physical stress.

People cope with stress in different ways. Some people breeze through life without worrying about anything, but most people, at some time or another, worry and get stressed.

Stress affects both your emotions and your body. Stress can alter the way you think about things, how you feel and how you react to people and situations.

The lists below describe some of the symptoms of stress.

PHYSICAL EMOTIONAL MENTAL
heart pounding
headaches
sweaty palms
indigestion
tight stomach muscles
shortness of breath
sleeplessness
moody
irritability
depressed/anxious
lack of sense of humour
emotional
hostile
nervous
forgetfulness
loss of concentration
poor judgment
disorganized
fuzzy perception
confused
lack of interest

Who Can I talk to?

If you feel you are stressed, it is important that you do something about it. Not reacting to stress quickly can have very negative long term effects. Ask for help, don’t bottle it up.

Three Towns Healthy Living runs a Stress Management initiative, and would be happy to assess your stress levels. We could make suggestions that would help you deal with the causes of your stress.

Getting older has it’s own pressures.

Getting older has it’s own pressures.

As an older person you will have had to live with stress throughout periods of your life and you may think those experiences will help you handle it better now. This is not always the case. When you were younger, stress was something that everyone brushed under the carpet. However, in today’s world, stress is a very real and concerning issue.

Stress is the same as worry. Worrying about something makes you stressed. Changes in your life, whether they are good changes or not, can cause emotional and physical stress.

People cope with stress in different ways. Some people breeze through life without worrying about anything, but most people, at some time or another, worry and get stressed.
