The Doing Well by People with Depression Project is working with the Three Towns Health Living Centre to offer information and assistance to people with mild to moderate mental health problems. The following supports are available:
Healthy reading
Would you like some guidance about what books, videos and DVDs might be useful for you? The local libraries in North Ayrshire have a range of books, tapes, DVDs, leaflets and videos that have been recommended by families, carers, sufferers of mental health problems and health professionals. Many of the resources in the ‘Health Information Section’ tell peoples’ stories and describe their experience of mental ill health. For more information contact the Doing Well Project on 01292 513992 or visit your local library.
Community Health in Local Libraries (CHILL)
Would you like some guidance about what books might be best for you? The Book Recommendation Scheme will help you. GPs and some community and voluntary services have a list of the best books for a range of common problems. So, if you feel that low mood is the main problem you want to tackle, the best book might be: ‘The Feeling Good Handbook’ by David Burns. Your GP or health professional will recommend a book from the recommended list and give you a copy of this list which you should then take to your local library to get the book you need. You can give this sheet to the librarian or have a look in the Health Information section. There is also a wide range of other books which you may find helpful. . For more information contact the Doing Well Project on 01292 513992 or visit your local library.
Help yourself to better health
The Doing Well by People with Depression Project has developed a workbook on many of the common things that can affect someone’s mental health. It is divided into two sections:
Section 1 describes lifestyle factors which may affect how you are feeling. This section will highlight any areas you might want to work on.
Section 2 allows you to put different self help techniques into practice. This may include carrying out tasks and activities which will help you to record how your symptoms and difficulties are improving while using these techniques.
If you would like a copy of this workbook, call Doing Well Project on 01292 513 992 and your workbook will be sent out to you.
Lifestyle Coach
The lifestyle coach is there to help you explore your difficulties and provide support. Your coach will work with you to develop a plan of action, which will probably involve some form of guided self-help. Your coach will also be able to provide information on local sources of support. To start with, you will have an initial appointment with the lifestyle coach of around one hour. If you need more contact, one or two further appointments can be arranged. The lifestyle coach is available in Fullarton Community Health House (Irvine) and Three Towns Healthy Living Community (Saltcoats).
