Bereavement / Loss

What is bereavement?

Bereavement is the process of mourning. One of the greatest losses that can occur is the death of someone you love. Bereavement is not restricted to people who have lost someone they have known for a long time.

What is grief?

Grief is the visible sign of mourning and includes a wide range of physical and emotional symptoms. Grief is a normal healthy response to loss. Not being able to grieve can cause emotional and/or physical problems at a later stage. Working through your grief can be a painful process, but is essential for future well-being.

Did you know?

There are five recgnised stages of greif.

  1. Numbness
  2. Yearning
  3. Anger / Strong Emotions / Depression
  4. Sadness
  5. Letting Go

How can you cope during the grieving process?

Ask for help and support from family, friends or a support group. Try to express your emotions. Accept that some things, like death, are beyond your control. Avoid making major decisions – your judgement may be clouded and changes could increase your stress levels.
Keep in touch with your doctor. He/She can help with sleep problems and can refer you to a therapist or counsellor if necessary.

Do children grieve in the same way as adults?

Children feel loss in much the same way as adults, although they may progress through them quicker. People sometimes make the mistake of trying to protect children from bereavement. It is better to be honest about your own grief and encourage them to talk about their feelings.

How can you help a family member or friend who is grieving?

  • Spend time with the personL
  • Listen to them
  • Avoid using clichés e.g. “time is a great healer”
  • Offer practical help such as cooking, shopping etc.

Finally, everyone is different but if the person is acting in extreme ways for a prolonged period, encourage them to seek professional help.
